Empowering Caribbean Youth to Protect Our Oceans: The Inspiring Story of Fish 'N Fins

In a world where the health of our oceans is under constant threat, one organization is stepping up to empower the next generation of ocean stewards. Fish 'N Fins, a non-profit based in Montserrat, is making waves with its innovative approach to marine conservation and youth empowerment.

The organization's recently released 2024 Annual Report paints a compelling picture of their impactful work. From restructuring their advisory board to bring in fresh perspectives, to conducting cutting-edge scientific studies and promoting ocean-climate justice, Fish 'N Fins is leaving an indelible mark on the Caribbean region.

At the heart of their mission is a steadfast commitment to youth development. Through accessible swimming, snorkeling, and marine science, Fish 'N Fins is fostering a new generation of ocean-aware individuals, equipping them with essential skills and instilling a deep sense of marine conservation.

"We're not just teaching skills – we're cultivating future ocean leaders who will shape the sustainable development of their island and the wider Caribbean region," explains Veta Wade, the founder and director of Fish 'N Fins.

The organization recognizes that data collection, processing, and interpretation can be daunting, but they are committed to simplifying these concepts into accessible and culturally appropriate science and advocacy that engages individuals as young as 12. By empowering youth to lead the charge, Fish 'N Fins aims to dismantle the legacies of colonial science and systemic racism that have historically alienated Black communities from their connection to the ocean.

"Our initiative will immerse youth in decision-making processes and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to advocate for environmental justice effectively," says Wade.

The report highlights key achievements, such as the establishment of the Youth Environmental Advocacy Crew (YEB), designed to foster mentorship and collaboration among youth leaders throughout the Caribbean. This initiative is crucial in addressing the gaps identified by Fish 'N Fins, where many youth ambassadors lack connection to grassroots conservation efforts, limiting their advocacy impact.

But Fish 'N Fins' reach extends far beyond Montserrat. The organization's leadership and public speaking engagements have taken them to academic institutions, global youth advocacy networks, and local community groups, garnering international acclaim for their work.

"Veta's speaking engagements have inspired audiences around the world, showcasing the power of grassroots initiatives to drive meaningful change in the blue economy and marine conservation," says Marisa Lopez, one of the organization's board members.

As Fish 'N Fins looks to the future, their goal is clear: to position Caribbean youth as key players in shaping a sustainable and resilient blue economy. With continued support and resources, they aim to empower the next generation with knowledge, skills, and a deep connection to their marine environment, ensuring that our oceans are protected, communities thrive, and sustainable practices become the norm.
