Celebrating World Tourism Week: People supporting turtles, turtles supporting people.

Updated: 5 days ago

As we celebrate World Tourism Week, we invite you to join us in promoting our community champions who are dedicated to researching the Montserrat's ocean giants. During sea turtle mating and nesting season, there's no better time to become a citizen scientist and contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures.

Imagine that your tropical holiday in paradise or your personal passion could help push marine science forward. Well, stop imagining because it can. We welcome you to join the Fish 'N Fins In-Water Turtle Project! You are also welcome to support our research through short-term ( mimumum 2 weeks voluntary work). Our initiative focuses on monitoring and conserving Green and Hawksbill Turtles in Montserrat via our science snorkel club.

This World Tourism Week, we want to highlight the significant potential of science tourism in our community. By engaging visitors in our conservation efforts, we not only promote awareness but also create a sustainable model that benefits both the local economy and our natural heritage.

1. How Does Citizen Science Work?

Citizen science is a collaborative approach that invites the public to participate in scientific research and data collection. At Fish 'N Fins, we encourage volunteers to join us in in-water surveys that monitor sea turtle populations. These surveys provide critical data on the distribution, abundance, and behavior of Green and Hawksbill turtles, all while fostering a deeper connection between tourists and the natural beauty of Montserrat.

2. Benefits of Citizen Science:

Engaging citizen scientists in sea turtle conservation offers numerous benefits. It allows us to gather data across larger geographic areas and over extended periods, enhancing our understanding of sea turtle populations and their habitat requirements. Additionally, it promotes public engagement and awareness, empowering individuals to become stewards of the environment. This sense of ownership can lead to increased support for conservation efforts, transforming tourists into champions for our local megafauna.

3. How Can Citizen Scientists Help with Sea Turtle Conservation?

Citizen scientists play a crucial role in monitoring the health of sea turtles and their foraging habitats in Montserrat. These observations provide valuable insights into the overall health of turtle populations and help identify potential threats, such as entanglement in fishing gear or habitat degradation. By participating, tourists can make a meaningful impact on the future of our marine life.

4. Collecting Data on Sea Turtles through In-Water Surveys:

You can actively contribute to sea turtle conservation by joining our in-water surveys. Participants will have the opportunity to record important data such as turtle sightings, behaviour, and habitat quality through underwater video stations. This data helps us track individual turtles, understand their movements, and assessing population trends, enriching the scientific knowledge base while enhancing your travel experience.

5. Other Contributions of Citizen Scientists to Save the Oceans:

Citizen scientists can significantly impact ocean conservation in various ways, including monitoring other ocean giants. At Fish 'N Fins, we invite volunteers to contribute to our Montserrat Marine Megafauna Photo ID Database. By sharing images of sharks, rays, whales, dolphins, and seabirds, you help build a comprehensive database that aids in the documentation and conservation of these marine species while creating lasting memories of your time in Montserrat.

6. Documenting Changes in Marine Ecosystems:

Citizen scientists are vital in documenting changes in marine ecosystems. Through regular surveys, participants can observe and record variations in coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other key habitats. These observations provide valuable information about the health and resilience of marine ecosystems, helping us develop effective conservation strategies that benefit both the environment and local tourism.

Fish 'N Fins In-Water Turtle Project offer a unique opportunity to celebrate World Tourism Week by actively contributing to the conservation of Green and Hawksbill turtles in Montserrat. By participating in our surveys and sharing images to our Marine Megafauna Photo ID Database, you become an integral part of our efforts to protect and preserve the ocean and its inhabitants. Join us today, and together, let's make a difference in the future of our marine ecosystems while enriching your travel experience in Montserrat!
